Norco has always had a very special relationship with Sprockids and the mountain biking community of the Sunshine Coast. On Saturday May 13th, twelve Norco Team and Staff Riders put on a riding clinic for members of the Sprockids “Coastriders” mountain bike club. Utilizing the stunts, dirt jumps, and trails of the Sprockids Park, the young riders were put through a variety of stations. The riders learned the skills necessary to safely and successfully ride skinnies, teeter totters, ramps, drop offs, ladder bridges, and dirt jumps. Over the course of the morning the skill level of the young riders improved dramatically and by the end of the session, many were riding stunts they previously had never even considered.

In the afternoon it was time for the teenagers and adults to ride with the Norco crew. We all headed up Mt. Elphinstone, along a twisty single-track entitled “Sidewinder,” until we reached our destination, a newly built stunt trail named “Scream Machine.' Those of us that made the climb were treated to a truly inspiration display of riding expertise by the Norco crew.

The Norco Crew really connected with the kids. Their positive energy and enthusiasm was passed on to everyone at the event. You could not have asked for better ambassadors of the sport. A lot of parents came out to watch and they couldn’t believe what their children were able to do. Many of the parents expressed they really didn’t have much of an idea about what happens in Sprockids. They knew we rode trails, but today’s clinic really opened their eyes to the exciting, adrenaline world of mountain biking. “Parents, Your Kids Aren’t In Kansas Any More!” Mountain biking is a multi faceted sport, and it takes incredible skill, dedication, and practice to become a strong all around rider. Having such a talent core of riders to demonstrate, model, and instruct our young riders is key to making sure they have the opportunity to develop the proper techniques necessary to experience all aspects of mountain biking. Today the Norco Riders did that, and so much more!

Team Symmetrics Update: Spring Newsletter
The squad has been once again racing all over the Americas, and with some fantastic results to boot. As the season begins to kick into high gear, the team has already won 25 races - not bad for the yellow-and-black! And there's plenty of good stuff looming, with some of the team's major goals in the very near future. There's a few races that the team has set its sights on in the next months - like the Tour de Beauce, The Nationals, and of course BC Superweek - so all this racing abroad should definitely be the turbocharge the guys and girls need.

The team returned to Canada after a very successful Vuelta a El Salvador. After some incredible mountain stages in intense heat, the team entered the final stage looking to do two things - take the stage and retain the points jersey - held by multiple-stage winner Andrew Randell. In order to steal away points from riders close in contention, Christian Meier attacked on the first of 20 laps. The plan worked as Meier stayed out there with another rider for 19 of 20 laps! Although the team couldn't quite pull off another win - Andrew 'Pinner' Pinfold took third, Randell fifth, and Erker ninth. But more importantly, Randell kept the sprinter's jersey, a great accomplishment for the team.

Dragon DH: Abercarn, Wales

This past weekend took myself, my mum, and Jill all the way to South Wales for the Dragon DH in Abercarn. It was kind of fun to be back to my roots, racing out of the family camper van at the local Welsh Series races. The only part that was missing was my Dad who was at the Grand Prix in Italy. Thankfully the weather held out for us all weekend and the camping was great. The track was a lot of fun, really flowy and fast but still rough in places. It was great to be racing again on British soil! I saw lots of people I haven't seen in years.

Saturday (Round 3): I had time to get a few practice runs in before racing started. We started racing by 11am. My 1st race run was pretty smooth with a couple of stops. I ended up with a time of 2:07. The format at Welsh races is best of two so my 2nd run I tried to go faster. I was aiming for the 2:00 barrier but I took off from the start trying too hard, got a little loose in a few turns and scrubbed a bit more speed than I wanted. I did improve my time but only by 1 second. This was still enough to give me a confident win in the Elite Women's class.

Sunday (Round 4): A little bit of rain over night left the track quite greasy. It managed to dry out by racing time though. My 1st run was going well but I got off line in one right hand turn and ended up over the bars in the next left due to a misplaced tree-stump (or wheel). : The 2nd run was a lot better and I came through at 2:07 again, enough to give me my 2nd win of the weekend.

Norco Ontario Cup Recap
Well, we had the perfect weather for what was anticipated to be the biggest Ontario Cup DH race ever and we didn’t disappoint. Canada’s largest DH and 4X race series broke its own attendance record for the most racers ever. I want to thank all the participants and parents for making this happen.

The racing was fast and furious on a new lower course that featured flow that would make the roller coasters at Canada’s Wonderland nervous! The log gap to tree gap to triple drops had mouths salivating and kept the times close.

In the elite men’s final it was a shootout as riders crossed the line, the middle of the pack had 6 riders within 1 second of each other!

Justin Brown (Norco Factory Racing) whipped over the line in a screaming 1:16.462 good enough for 3rd, however his teammate Derek Cowell (Norco Factory Racing) nipped him with a 1:16.329 and stole 2nd, but all awaited Drew Pautler (Sweet Pete’s Racing) the final rider and he showed them who was boss with a 2 second lead of 1:14.218 and secured 1st place.
