An Extremely Limited Edition Ryan Leech Action Figure

Words by Ryan Leech

My parents are proud of my career as a pro mountain biker, what a blessing to have their support through the years. As I diversify my offerings in the world to include yoga and Integral Coaching®, my Dad decided to present me with a gift to commemorate my years thus far as a pro.

He secretly began tinkering in his workshop attempting to modify one of those bmx flick trix models to look like my trials bike. It didn’t work. So he started from scratch!

A reference picture and some brass tubing…

Through the years Norco has been kind enough to continue tweaking and making me trials frames exactly as I like, and I’ve been riding a white Manifesto frame for the last few. With careful measurements and soldering, clever jigs and fixtures, my Dad managed to replicate it, in miniature!

The pieces coming together…

During my career, I have partnered with many supportive sponsors, on the back of the Trials Trix packaging, my dad listed them, including my very first bike shop sponsor Rocky Cycle in Surrey. For accuracy, he sought the kind advice of Peter Stace-Smith and Jonathan Duncan at Norco, my wife Caryn, and her sister Corinne for some photos. Clearly the detail work wasn’t reserved just for the model…

The details…

With the packaging details in place, the bike still needed painting and decals. Somehow, my Dad managed to getterdun. The model in total length is just 4″, so those are tiny decals!

The Norco Manifesto Model

To complete the ensemble, he packed it up in a clean, off the shelf style packaging. A touching gift to represent some amazing memories. THANKS DAD!

For Nostalgia’s Sake – Since We ‘Evolved’

A lot has changed in cycling over the past decade but there are certain aspects that stand out in mind as turning points. These moments of change are different for everyone;  some may be defined by a product, others by learning a skill and still others see this change through viewing the experience of others. This may sound lame to live through others, but when the names at hand are Ryan Leech and Jeff Lenosky it is understandable. For myself one such moment was channeled through the movie ‘Evolve’. Evolve was a mid-nineties trials movie which I see as a changing point for cycling.

If you haven’t seen the movie here it is for your enjoyment. If you have seen it, watch it again and reminisce.

A Better Than Ever Seattle Bike Expo

This past weekend the Norco truck and trailer packed up and head down to the 21st annual Seattle Bike expo. Put on by the Cascade Bicycle Club this has become the largest bicycle consumer show in North America. With more than two hundred exhibitors and thousands of consumers showing up the weekend was a flurry of activity. Norco had some near-ceiling-high towers set up with a display of bikes alongside  the latest and greatest from Axiom and Mace.

Next to the Norco setup always seemed to be a mob of people waiting to see the next Ryan Leech Trials Show or Artistic Cycling Demonstration. Having Ryan do 4 shows over the two days was a treat for everyone at the show. Having the Artistic Cycling team as well was simply icing on the cake.

If the expo, the trials demo and the artistic cycling wasn’t enough for you, Ryan was also leading a morning Yoga session both days of the show. A group of yoga enthusiasts showed up each day to partake in Ryan’s class.

With more than 200 exhibitors at the show it took a fair bit of time to see everything. That is if you could actually see everything. Three of the exhibitors present also happened to be Norco Factory Team sponsors FSA, Ergon and Nuun.

2010 Norco Launch – Great riding in our own backyard.

The 2010 Norco product launch took place this year in our own backyard, Vancouver BC. This stellar location boasted some of the best riding in the world but also showcased Vancouver, the 2010 Olympic City!

The Launch started off at the Sheraton Wall Center where retailers, distributors and media from around the world assembled to see the new lineup for 2010. The evening kicked off with a Ryan Leech Demo. Ryan never dissapoints and with a little bit of improv-trials he even used some of the local art in the show. That was not planned . . . .

Day two of the launch involved bike presentations and a ride on Vancouver’s North Shore. Riding some of the classic trails was a real eye opener as there are not many places around the world where the riding is this good.

The third day of the launch was busy on bikes. Starting off with an Urban ride around Downtown Vancouver lead by Ryan Leech and Dylan Korba kicked it off. The bikes on the ride ranged from hybrid commuters to fixies, electric bikes to trials bikes. There was a taste of everything along the ride. Riding through the false creek area, Ryan and Dylan were on entertainment duty while the rest of us enjoyed the scenery and experienced the Cycling lanes on the Burrard St. Bridge. Way to go Vancouver on opening this up to cyclists!.

After the Urban ride and a quick lunch we headed off to Burnaby Mountain, home of Simon Fraser University for a taste of All Mountain terrain. Burnaby is a great area to ride offering a little bit of everything. It was a beautiful day, great trails, and a BBQ waiting at the end. The perfect end to a great launch.
