An Extremely Limited Edition Ryan Leech Action Figure

Words by Ryan Leech

My parents are proud of my career as a pro mountain biker, what a blessing to have their support through the years. As I diversify my offerings in the world to include yoga and Integral Coaching®, my Dad decided to present me with a gift to commemorate my years thus far as a pro.

He secretly began tinkering in his workshop attempting to modify one of those bmx flick trix models to look like my trials bike. It didn’t work. So he started from scratch!

A reference picture and some brass tubing…

Through the years Norco has been kind enough to continue tweaking and making me trials frames exactly as I like, and I’ve been riding a white Manifesto frame for the last few. With careful measurements and soldering, clever jigs and fixtures, my Dad managed to replicate it, in miniature!

The pieces coming together…

During my career, I have partnered with many supportive sponsors, on the back of the Trials Trix packaging, my dad listed them, including my very first bike shop sponsor Rocky Cycle in Surrey. For accuracy, he sought the kind advice of Peter Stace-Smith and Jonathan Duncan at Norco, my wife Caryn, and her sister Corinne for some photos. Clearly the detail work wasn’t reserved just for the model…

The details…

With the packaging details in place, the bike still needed painting and decals. Somehow, my Dad managed to getterdun. The model in total length is just 4″, so those are tiny decals!

The Norco Manifesto Model

To complete the ensemble, he packed it up in a clean, off the shelf style packaging. A touching gift to represent some amazing memories. THANKS DAD!

Ryan’s First Ride With the Norco Truax

Happy Early Christmas to a spoiled Pro-Rider! A brand new Norco Truax, decked with the best of Shimano and Rock Shox. Oh how that hard knock life turned buttery smooth on my first ride out…

A factory team custom build :-)

Post Build Smile

Last year, I requested one go-go-gatchet trail bike, it was delivered in the form of a Norco Range. For 2012, I thought I’d add some variety. My two bikes of choice are The Revolver (for which I’m still in lively anticipation of), and The Truax. Jay Hoots = Truax, yes; but Ryan Leech < Truax. In other words, I’m not worthy of it’s magnificence (Jay, that means I’m not worthy of you too brotha!).

My first interpretation of the name is based on the fact that it’s a Shore style bike, and the Shore is dense with trees, and you need a True Ax if you want any hopes of navigating and surviving out there. You gotta have the right tool, at least that’s what Dad always said. Good luck with that argument kids ;-) My silly interpretations aside, the real reason is that an employee summited Mt. Truax, a 9450 foot peak near Bralorne, BC.

My first ride was solo, roll on the road for 10 minutes, hit the trails at Burnaby mountain for a climb up and rip down. Sunny skies with lingering mud made for a true break in blast.

Pedaling up proved true to the ART suspension platforms claim that a rearward rear wheel axle path combined with pedaling eliminates unwanted pedal bob. Seems that the leg energy I saved transfered directly into grinnage on the way down Gear jammer; the pleasing ease of bump compliance is due partly for the same reason it pedals up so nicely, a rear wheel axle travel path gets the wheel out of the way faster on sharp hits, good deal indeed.

The bike isn’t the only one absorbing

Now, it would be easy for a technoweenie to overindulge in the marvel of such a well balanced red beauty, but for a true experience, the scenery needs to be acknowledged by stopping every now and then to oogle at more than the bike. This isn’t a race bike, drop down into a Norco Phaser or up to an Aurum if youre concerned with times; but havin’-a-time on this bike in the forest means feeling the air and wind on the skin, smelling rotting logs, listening to birds and the tree branch rustle, acknowleding passers by, sensing the interconnectedness of the delicate ecosystem that functions with such effortlessly ease. This kind of tuning-in brings another layer of free to the freeride experience. Ride ON!

Ryan Leech’s World Famous Show hits San Francisco

Recently Norco Factory Team rider Ryan Leech made the trip south to San Francisco for the San Francisco Bike Expo. Over the weekend event Ryan put on several of his world famous trials demonstrations. None other than Ryan’s father filmed and edited a clip from one of the shows. Have a watch.

The Autograph: 10 tips for signing posters with Ryan Leech

My guess is that I’ve signed as many or more posters than any other pro mtn biker in history. A big claim, but it is my ritual to sit down with a stack of posters after every trials show and sign free posters. Having performed more than 2000 shows, and signed anywhere from 10 to 100 posters a show, well, it’s a lot of posters! Based on my experience, he are some tips to prepare you for the next time a fan comes up to you requesting your John Hancock! If that’s not likely to happen, hope this post at least amuses you ;-)

San Francisco Bike Expo 2011

  1. Mutualize the interaction, human to human, with eye contact and touch (high five or handshake). Don’t ‘check-out’ and go on autopilot, it’s not fun for you or the fan!
  2. Personalize it by asking for and writing their name on the poster. Make sure you ask for spelling, and if you ask if the spelling is correct afterward, know that they may say yes even thought it’s wrong, so pay attention to their subtle clues (pause in answer, pitch in voice, body language). If you make a mistake, start with a fresh poster.
  3. If you forget their name before writing it down (very common when presence wains), just ask them to spell it and hope you’re not busted with a response such as “B”, “o”, “b”.
  4. Know when to ask “what’s you’re name” or “who can I make it out to” based on whether it is a fan or an Uncle getting a poster for his nephews; this is done by sensing the level of excitement, nervousness, and facial expression.
  5. If the line up isn’t too long, add a quick message that applies to the age of recipient; my favorite go-to’s are “Ride ON!”, “Have fun”, or “Practice, Patience, Persistence…”. What might yours be? (I need new ideas!!!)
  6. Use a refillable marker to save waste, and write their name small and your signature big and bold. Strive to make both the actual signature and the execution of it an artistic expression.
  7. Don’t sign expensive kids clothing because you might have to answer to their parents later.
  8. When signing jerseys or shirts, stretch them tight, with the front and back separated so it doesn’t bleed through, and then sign with the edge of your pen so it doesn’t catch the material.
  9. Use a refillable water bottle to drink water from to set a good sustainability example.
  10. Know that the last few people you’re rushing to sign a poster for may be those that your conscious attention with may be a big deal to them even if it’s not for you. Encourage this by asking them a question and engaging.

Have you recived a poster from me before? Did I live up to these suggestions? Ride ON!

Ryan

Sam Wins The Silverstar Two Wheel Bike Fest Jump Jam

Silverstar Resort was the place to be this past weekend as it was home to the Silverstar Two Wheel Festival that replaced the fallout of Goat Style. Dispite the absence of the slopestyle competition the Resort had the best turnout ever pushing out the old record from 2008 at the last VPS Fest event. The festival featured a dirt jump competition, COC Airbag, Ryan Leech Trials Shows and of course some of the world’s best lift access mountain biking.

The big event for the weekend was the Dirt Jump Competition where Norco riders Sam Dueck and Brett Rheeder came 1 and 2 followed by Casey Groves close behind in 3rd spot. Congratulations guys on a wicked event. For more info on the weekend’s events check out nsmb.com.

A big thanks to everyone that made the event possible including Silverstar, Kelowna Cycle, Skookum Cycle, Sovereign Cycle, Oakley, Camp of Champs and Ryan Leech

2012 Norco Dealer Launch Recap

_MG_6134

The 2012 Norco International Dealer Launch took place in July where the top Norco Dealers from Canada, US and International locations gathered in beautiful North Vancouver BC for the Launch of the 2012 Norco Bikes. The event span over three days where attendees were given the lowdown on the new Norco product line. The most important part of the launch though is getting out to ride; Norco bikes are made to be ridden and that is what the launch is all about.

2011_07_NorcoDealerLaunch-11

Upon arrival in North Vancouver the event kicked off with an urban ride around the famous Stanley Park Seawall. For this ride, the crew split into groups and head out for a post-travel light pedal. The 10km loop around the park takes riders beneath the Lions Gate Bridge, past the 9 O’Clock Gun, through 3rd beach and back to the Seabus for a quick hop back to the hotel. For this ride, the perfect bike can be a mountain bike, road bike or even and urban commuter- it doesn’t matter. It is all about being on a bike – any bike!

2011_07_NorcoDealerLaunch-17

Following the urban ride, the next morning was time for a bit of a classroom session to learn about the bikes that were to be ridden that afternoon. Setting up in the world famous riding area of Seymour Mtn. riders had the option of Road, Cross Country, All Mountain or Freeride trail options. With more than 120 demo bikes available, everyone was given the opportunity to ride whatever bike they felt the urge to swing a leg over.

2011_07_NorcoDealerLaunch-26

The Trails in the Mt. Seymour area are amazing. From flowing singletrack to steep rocky climbs there is a little bit of everything whether you are testing out a 100mm 29er or a 200mm DH bike there is something that will suit just about anyone on pretty much any bike.

After an afternoon of riding and a few minor tweaks to the fleet of bikes, we did it all over again the following day. Starting the morning off with a few presentations we were back out riding the trails by lunchtime.

2011_07_NorcoDealerLaunch-50

At the end of two days of riding, the bikes were rounded up and tucked away. All 120 plus bikes had seen several riders and pretty much every attendee had ridden at least a few different  bikes. Besides a little bit of west coast rain the event could not have gone any smoother. The result was smiling faces, muddy bikes and a whole lot of excitement for the year to come.

2011_07_NorcoDealerLaunch-23

No event is complete without a few beers, a BBQ and of course a Ryan Leech trials demonstration. For this we head over to a local Jay Hoots Bike Park where we set up and did a little bit of socializing. We were lucky enough to have the boys from the Dirt Norco Race Team Ben Reid and Dan Stanbridge out for the event as well. When they weren’t talking about their input into the 2012 Norco Aurum or the current World Cup Season and found a little time to hit the dirtjumps local park.

2011_07_NorcoDealerLaunch-34

Of course, the Ryan Leech Trials Demonstration is always a crowd pleaser. With a bit of a slippery stage set, Ryan put on two shows at the BBQ and did not disappoint. What an amazing show! If you have never seen a Ryan Leech Demo, put it on your demo list. This is the best trials demonstration in the world!

A big thanks to everyone that came out! Hopefully we will sea you again next year. For everyone else that was not able to attend. Check back next month for the new 2012 Norco Bikes to be on norco.com. In the meantime here are a few links to tide your excitement.

Ryan Leech and Danny MacAskill – The Ultimate Show

There are a few names in the cycling world that it seems everyone knows. Spanning over decades there are still names that make your ears perk up when they ring through the airwaves. These are names such as Pete, Tinker, Lopes, Tomac, Hill, the list goes on but in this case we are talking about Leech and Macaskill. Two of the best known trials riders around this past weekend they finally got together through the venue of Crankworx. Saturday’s 2pm Ryan Leech Trials Demo featured a guest appearance from Danny Macaskill where the two performed together for a massive audience on the biggest day of Kokanee Crankworx.

Watching the two ride together, the two styles could not be more different. Ryan is a a composed, methodical and precise rider while Danny is Fluid, momentum driven and powerful rider. Both incredible to watch, but approach each obstacle in a completely different manner.

Crankworx 2011 – Team, Trials and Tricks

It is that time of year again. The time where it is normal to see Semanuck, Lopes, and Hill in one spot. The time where a liquid induced headache is considered a necessary handicap to level the playing field. That is right, this is Crankworx.

After launching the 2012 bike line to Norco Dealers and international media, it is time to give the public the first peek at the 2012 lineup. Plus, the Norco Team has assembled in Whistler BC for a bit of a reunion. With Ryan Leech, Jay Hoots, Sam Dueck, Darcy Turenne, Angie Hohenwarter, Nick Geddes, and the boys from Dirt all in Whistler for the week, things get interesting. Through the week, Ryan in doing daily demos, Sam is competing in Best Trick and Slopestyle, Darcy hosted the Deep Summer Photo Challenge, The Dirt Norco Race Team is Racing the DH(s) and Jay is riding and inspiring in his usual stoke-inspiring manner. The Norco Team is in full force taking charge of this town they call Whistler. Here are a few photos from the week so far. I hope you enjoy!

BC Ride To Conquer Cancer – Great Work!!!!

The British Columbia Ride To Conquer Cancer is the 2nd of 4 tours across Canada raising money in the search for a cure to cancer. For the BC ride, 2879 riders participated riding approximately 220kms from Vancouver BC to Seattle WA. These riders came together to raise an impressive $11.1 million. That averages out to nearly $4000 per person!

The ride down to Seattle was the wettest of the tours 3 year history. Riders fought through rain, cold and wind for 2 days in order to complete this epic and inspiring ride. Along the way, Norco was on location as the official Bike Tech for the event. Changing flat tires, replacing tires, fixing brakes, adjusting gears, truing wheels and anything else that came up along the way allowed the whole lot of participants to make it through to the finish line.

A big thank you to all the participants, volunteers, supporters and RTCC personnel for making this happen. You are the means to finding a cure! For more photos check out flickr.com/norcobikes

Next week is the Alberta edition of The Ride To Conquer Cancer so stay tuned for coverage of that event as well.
